1. What does a player need to play soccer?
Each player needs to provide their own soccer shoes (cleats) and shin pads. Our
club will provide a team jersey and socks.
2. When does the season start?
About mid-April. It depends on field conditions - the date is set by the City and
the Schoolboard.
3. When will we hear from our coach?
You will get a call from your coach sometime during the first week of April. If
you do not hear from him/her by April 10, please email our office at omysa@shaw.ca
4. When are the practices and games?
Each team will practice one night a week and have a game on Saturday. An
exception is the U18 division -- U18 girls will play on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings (no practices). U18 boys will play on Monday and Wednesday evenings
(no practices). The U18 division runs from mid-April until the end of June.
U6 players will have a group practice on Mondays at Dorothea Walker
Elementary and play a game on Saturday. The U7 players will have a group
practice on Tuesdays at Dorothea Walker Elementary and play a game on
Saturday. The U6 division finishes at the end of June. All other divisions run
until the end of June, break for the summer, then start again in September for
about one month.
5. What happens if a player cannot make the practice night he/she is assigned
to?
Coaches will not know their practice night until the end of March - thus you will
not know until the first week of April. If you have another activity on that night
and need to switch your practice night, email our office at omysa@shaw.ca
Give your name, birthdate, coaches' name you are playing for, and night of your
practice. Our administrator will keep a list of players who need to change teams
because of activity conflict. It if is possible to switch to another team, it will be
done. If it is not possible, we offer a full refund of your money.
OMYSA REGISTRATION COMMITTEE
2009 TEAM FORMATION GUIDELINES AND CRITERIA
When forming teams, there are many factors that can affect each age group, such as overall registration numbers, how many coaches we have recruited and how many players from each school are registered.
Below are listed the main guidelines that the Registration Committee uses when forming teams for the various age divisions within the Okanagan Mission Youth Soccer Association.
1) The previous year’s team will remain together as much as possible to reflect the social and team bonds built between players.
2) Players from each school will be grouped together as circumstances permit.
3) COYSA , the governing body of OMYSA, has mandated the following criteria for team formation:
Team rosters must be comprised of evenly distributed A, B and C players. At the end of each season, coaches are responsible for player rankings which are carried over to the new season upon registration (U8 and older). In the event that a coach does not submit their player rankings, or a player is a new registrant, the player is assigned a “new or non-ranked” status and those players are equally distributed throughout the teams in that division. An “A” player demonstrates strong and balanced skills in all aspects of the game. A “B” player is one that shows skills in certain areas but is not consistent across the main areas of dribbling, ball control, passing, shooting and strategy. A “C” player is one who has need of improvement in all areas.
1) Teams in the U14 and older divisions must be comprised of equal numbers of both birth years.
2) Team numbers in each age division fluctuate each year depending upon registration. COYSA determines the number of teams in each age division and it may be necessary to create or dismantle teams. This may result in an amalgamation and blending of previous teams with consideration given to balanced teams and returning coaches.
3) Ranked players will be moved, when necessary, to create balanced teams as per COYSA criteria. This may result in numerous schools represented on one team and the fragmentation of previous year’s teams, however, the goal is to create evenly competitive divisions and give each team and player a chance at success.
4) OMYSA will attempt to accommodate any reasonable player request, if circumstances allow it.
5) New players will be added to existing teams to foster a welcoming attitude within our club.
6) The team formation committee will ensure each coach’s child is on his/her team.
7) Team rosters must comply with maximum number of players allowed per team, as determined by COYSA.
Please remember that all these factors are considered when creating teams. There is a committee of at least two or more volunteers who form teams, double check for consistency and work with the Club’s administrator to ensure the guidelines are met to the best extent possible.
The committee takes a great deal of time with every age group to create fair and balanced teams. Some years there may be more changes than other years. Please understand all of the effort that goes into these decisions and help support the OMYSA club in its efforts to offer balanced teams for all children.
We ask that all parents encourage their coaches to submit their player rankings at the end of every season – without rankings it is very difficult to form teams.
And, most important - if any parent has a concern with the placement of their child, we ask that you contact the Head Volunteer Registrar (using the website) so that your concerns can be addressed.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are pleased to assist the Club!
