Tiering
The Tiering Evaluations were held Saturday October 23 and Sunday October 24 for these age groups. We had a good turnout with roughly 200 kids showing up both days. Our thanks to all the volunteers from the registration tent, to the evaluators and coaches and Board members who organized the weekend. It was a big effort and worked smoothly. Several of the other Clubs held their Tiering Evaluation on the same weekend. For all parents and kids who are interested in the process here is an update to keep you informed.
Tier One Process
Each registrant was evaluated across a number of criteria that we set ranging from ball control, passing, dribbling to decision making and effort. We placed coaches on the fields as well as evaluators. After the evaluations were done, all sheets were handed to our Club’s administrator who has created spreadsheets for each registrant. The evaluators will be meeting in November as a group and we will hold separate meetings for each age group since the evaluators were different. The evaluators will make all decisions on a consensus basis. They will rank/rate registrants according to their scores and there will be registrants who are strong, those who are weak and those whom they may wish to have another look at before deciding. Any evaluator who has a child up for evaluation is not allowed to evaluate their own child.
There will be a third tryout in late January, likely on a Sunday. This will be open only to those kids who were unable to attend the first two tryouts. We will also invite goalies back and we also may call back some players for a closer look. Please note we will not make any announcements until after we hold the third tryout and the team announcements will be made at some point in February. Once all the tryouts are done, the evaluators will meet to decide on the final roster. Please note that all decisions of the Evaluation Committee are final.
Here are some questions and answers that we have developed for your guidance:
Why are we Tiering?
COYSA and the five youth soccer Clubs have agreed to create a competitive Tier for those kids who want to a higher level of competition. This is based on several years of consultation and discussions amongst Clubs. It serves to allow multi-sport kids to develop their soccer skills at a higher level but who, have for a variety of reasons, not chosen to play for Kelowna United. The Tiering was unanimously voted on by all 5 Clubs for these age groups only and it will be introduced in 2011.
Who is Eligible to Tryout?
Any player who is a member of OMYSA.
When are Tryouts?
The initial two tryouts were held Sat Oct 23 and Sun Oct 24. A third tryout will be held in January and will be open only to those who missed the first two tryouts and for goalies and as well. There may be some invited who need a closer second look by evaluators.
Will Tiering Cost more?
No, this will not cost anymore than the normal OMYSA registration fee set for 2011.
Will Tiered Teams play a Different Format?
Tier 1 teams will continue to play one game on Saturdays, but they “may” practice twice a week and “may” also be entered into tournaments for their respective age groups. Tier 1 teams will stay within the Tier throughout the 2011 soccer season.
Will there be changes in Tiering in the future?
As with all new processes, we will learn as we go. Our intention is to be equitable and fair. The Board of the OMYSA will develop a template for Tiering that will reduce work efforts when we repeat this process for 2012. It is the intention of COYSA to stick with Tiering.
