Referees

How do I become a referee?

In order to become a referee, you have to attend (and pass!) a clinic. The Class 5 (Small sided game) clinic is designed for 12 and 13 year olds (by March 31) interested in becoming officials. Class 5 certification allows you to referee Mini Soccer games and Assistant Referee (AR) divisional youth games.

District certification at the youth level allows you to referee divisional youth games and AR BC sanctioned adult games. You have to be at least 14 years old to attend a District clinic.

District certification at the adult level (17 or older) allows you to referee both adult and youth games.

You do not need to complete the Class 5 clinic before taking the District clinic, as long as you are old enough to register.

No matter what level of official you are, each year you must take an annual refresher course.

Important, before taking any of the courses you are expected to know the Laws of the Game, you can obtain a copy from this link: http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/federation/81/42/36/lawsofthegameen.pdf

Small Sided Referees can referee Mini Soccer games up to U12 and Assistant Referee Divisional Youth Soccer games.

In addition to a whistle and a Law Book, you need a uniform (black referee shirt, black shorts, black socks, black soccer shoes), a digital watch, and flags. Details on all of these will be covered in the clinics.

More information about officiating is available at www.bcsoccer.net.

How much does it pay?
Mini Soccer pays $12-$18 per game, depending on the age group.

Divisional soccer pays $10-$25 for an AR, and $25-$45 for a referee.

Kelowna Utd pays $15-$35 for an AR $30-$55 for a referee:

How do I get games?
You will be assigned games by the referee scheduler.
For mini games there are local schedulers.
For U11 and up (divisional) it is Eugene Hologroski, email ric@centraloksoccer.com
Once you’ve completed a clinic, the referee scheduler will be given your name, age, contact information and an estimate of the level of game you can referee or AR.
You should email the referee scheduler each month in advance with your availability this is the only way they know if you are available.
Remember you cannot accept assignments for games in which a close relative is playing or in a division in which you play.

Adult referees:
All adult referees must complete a Criminal Record Check by May 1st, 2011 to be assigned games.

What kind of support is there for officials?
Each youth club has a Referee Mentor, whose job is to provide on-field support and suggestions. They’re also available to answer questions or address concerns that you have.

Any questions should be directed to Eugene, the Referee-in-Chief, at ric@centraloksoccer.com
